Position Description: Museum Director
Location: Greater Kent Historical Society
The Museum Director is responsible for the general and fiscal leadership and management of the Greater Kent Historical Society (GKHS) Museum, including programs, partnerships, fundraising, budgets, and public relations. The Museum Director is charged with delivering on the mission and goals of the Kent Historical Society in a fiscally-sound manner and plays a leading role in the GKHS, working closely with the Board and staff, reporting to the President, in developing and articulating the strategic direction of the Museum and implementing the resulting strategies and initiatives for both the short term and the long term.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Create short-term and long-range plans for the administration of the Greater Kent Historical Society Museum, including facility improvements, capital campaign fundraising, educational programming and staffing
- Hire, train, and develop, and evaluate staff performance to take appropriate action to recognize, develop, and ensure productivity and engagement
- Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers, developing and reviewing work assignments and developing the volunteer recognition program to maximize museum operations and customer service
- Manage the daily operation of the museum facility, effectively using the practices of non-profit organization management, including governmental procedures, financial management and non-profit board administration
- Develop an annual museum budget, working with the GKHS Board of Directors and staff
- Negotiate and supervise contracts with artists, historians, and scholars for public programs
- Create job requirements, interview and hire contractors, and review their work
- Consult with the GKHS President regarding museum usage, operations, and personnel issues
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of the community, Parks Department, Historical Society, public and private organizations, school districts, and City Boards and Commissions in daily customer service opportunities
- Provide administrative support to the GKHS Board of Directors
- Foster a cooperative environment between the City of Kent and the GHKS
- Prepare agendas and minutes for meetings and attends all regular and special Board meetings
- Oversee the professional care and management of the museum’s artifacts, exhibits and library, and photograph and document collections using knowledge of preservation, care, handling, storage and security of collections
- Develop exhibits for display using common hand tools; follows basic safety procedures in setting up and removing exhibits
- Develop creative and educational displays, exhibits, programs and curricular materials for museum, schools and visiting groups
- Provide tours, board retreats, service organization slide show, visits schools, and develops outreach materials
- Develop grant proposals and funding requests on behalf of the GKHS and conduct an annual fundraising campaign
- Produce gala fundraising events, working with volunteers
- Write and design museum publicity pieces
- Uses computer programs and graphics materials, creates written materials including newsletter, historical texts, volunteer manuals, grant materials and correspondence.
- Provides museologic/ historic technical and reference assistance to community members.
- Presents monthly reports on museum issues and achievements at Board of Director meetings
- Represents the City and the museum in a professional manner at public meetings concerning heritage, +including the presentation of educational presentations, workshops, lectures and technical papers
- Perform other, related work as required
- Offer technical assistance to staff on more complex problems and respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive conflicts and complaints.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Demonstrates knowledge of the history of the state of Washington and the Whiter River Valley region
- Principles and practices of advanced strategic planning, particularly in a museum or non-profit environment

- Managing staff including hiring, training, directing, evaluating, rewarding and disciplining employees
- Developing and implementing communications and public relations programs and initiatives
- Ensure a staff capable of providing services to maintain all museum operations by providing managerial leadership, motivation and supervision to staff and volunteers
- Develop and implement strategic communications and public relations plans
- Work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including the Board of Directors, employees, citizens, volunteers, program participants, and other supporters
- Create a strong, mutually supportive work spirit and culture where people can do their best
- Develop, align and deploy business and communications strategies with a proven ability to short and long-term implementation plans accomplished
- Work well under the pressure of deadlines, unpredictability and multiple priorities
- Build relationships with the flexibility and finesse to “manage by influence”
- Develop budgets and manage resource allocations
- Take on tough issues willingly and initiate action when appropriate
MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Master’s degree in museology, history, anthropology, archeology or related field and at least 2 years of paid museum management and operations experience; OR
- Bachelor’s degree with at least 3 years of professional paid experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for successful performance in the position.
Or: In lieu of the above requirements, the incumbent may possess any combination of relevant education and experience which would demonstrate the individual’s knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties listed above.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain within thirty (30) days of employment
- Bilingual abilities desired, but not required

Typical business office machinery and equipment including but not limited to personal computer, telephone, fax and copy machine, calculator, smartphone and projector.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
